Silvester Schiele Co-Founder of Rotary
SYLVESTER SCHIELE. Sylvester was one of the original four who, in 1905,
(Feb. 23rd) got together and formed the first Rotary Club. I had seen him
once or twice at conventions but had never got to know him. . When attending the 50th Anniversary convention of R. I.
at Chicago in June 1955, I went to the cemetery and saw the graves of Paul
Harris and Sylvester, side by side. There is an inscription on Sylvester's
head stone which reads - "Co-founder of Rotary International". This was a
surprise to me although it is well known that Sylvester was the mainstay of
Paul Harris for the first year or so of Rotary's existence. At this convention also met and got to know Jessie
Schiele, Sylvester's widow. She has a great fund of experiences of Rotary's
early days and is a gracious lady. Our private luncheon on June 2nd at the
Sheman Hotel was to us a great event. We were honoured by having, in
addition to Mrs. Schiele, Jean Harris, widow of Paul P. Harris, also Harry
and Mrs. Ruggles and Geo. Harris. It is not generally known that Sylvester served as
Treasurer of R.I. from June 1945 to December 1945. This was following the
death of Rufe Chapin and prior to the appointment of Dick Vernor. J.A.C. |
