Joe's handwritten diaries speak for themselves. They reveal Joe's deep understanding and appreciation of all that Rotary stands for. They are intermingled with character sketches and keen personal observations of Rotarians and Rotary activities. It was my privilege for many years to drive Joe to the annual international meetings in Rochester, NY. During those three hour drives both ways Joe regaled me with his long time experiences, he was DG in 1923. I was fascinated by his stories about the various presidents, conventions and his idol General Secretary Chester Perry. As a successful businessman, Joe could be both critical and very analytical of Rotary objectives, projects and administration. All this put Rotary for me into a perspective I would never have had. Joe, on his death, willed me his Rotary library consisting of International Directories, Manuals of Procedure and Convention Proceedings going back to the first convention of Rotary clubs in America 1910. The library takes up 21 ft of shelf space and is a true memento of my friend Joe, the quintessential Rotarian, if ever there was one. Tibor Gregor Past R.I. Treasurer Past R.I. Director |
