PHILIP LOVEJOY, Jacksonville, Florida, U.S.A.

Past Secretary, Rotary International.

Philip Lovejoy was Secretary of Rotary International from 1942 until his retirement on December 31,1952. Previously, he served as First Assistant Secretary of Rotary International from 1930 until 1942. He is now Executive Director of the Children's Home Society of Florida, with headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida.

He was born in Portland, Maine, was graduated from the University of Michigan, and received an honorary LL.D degree from Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, Texas. He is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Delta Kappa honorary societies, has been decorated by the President of Chile as a Commander of the Bernardo O'Higgins Order of Merit, and has been awarded the King Christian X Medal of Denmark.

A Rotarian since 1924, he is a former member of the Rotary Clubs of Chicago and Evanston, Illinois, and Hamtramck and Mt. Clemens, Michigan, and is now, a member of the Rotary Club of Jacksonville, Florida.

During World War I, Mr. Lovejoy was an officer in the U.S. Army and later held administrative educational positions in the State of Michigan. He is a member of the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and he has traveled extensively throughout the world.

PHILIP LOVEJOY

Phil took over from Ches. as Secretary of R. I. on July 1st, 1942 and carried on until December 31st, 1952.

When Ches left many of us felt he could never be replaced and of course no other man could possibly have his intimate background as he saw Rotary grow from just one club to several thousand clubs. However, Phil Lovejoy proceeded to do a grand job right from the start. He had, of course, worked with Ches for many years and before being employed by Rotary International he had a fine experience in the field of education, so was well fitted for his work with R. I. So again in 1952 it seemed Rotary was suffering a heavy loss but George Means took over after working with Phil for years, and Rotary moves on.

Phil has many good years left and every Rotarian wishes him success in abundance and Marie will be able to become acquainted with him again!
