On the opposite [above] page we have a photo of eight wonderful men who served as Presidents of Rotary International. This picture was taken at Lake Placid, N. Y. at the time of the International Assembly - 1955. Left to right:
This is a sample of the type of men who have led Rotary since 1910. I have enjoyed knowing each of than well. We had Percy Hodgson and his. beautiful wife, Edith, in Toronto for two full days during Percy's year as President. We also had Frank and Margaret Spain with us for a day or so and then they went north to Schreiber to a charter night and were conveyed from the C.P.R. station to the hotel in a sled drawn by dogs. They travelled north in the C.P.R.'s Vice President's special car. Russ Greiner, now 87, has had a grand career in Rotary and now is our real elder statesman. I have known him 35 years and visited him in Kansas City in 1953 and 1957. Guy Gundaker presided at the Toronto convention in 1924 so has a special spot in our hearts. Joaquin Serratosa Cibils is from beautiful Montevideo. I spent a grand day with him there in January 1956. Dick Hedke from Detroit is a close neighbor and we have known him well for many years. Angus Mitchell had just been created "Sir Angus" before I spent 3 days with him in Melbourne in April of 1956. He is perhaps the most beloved past President of R.I. and they are all loved. Fernando Carbajal (Ferdi) is a friend of everyone. I had two delightful days with him at his city of Lima, Peru in January 1956. Great Fellows! . J. A. C. May 4th, 1958. |
