Rotary Biography of JOHN POOLE Washington. D.C. U.S.A. At the time of his death, John Poole was President of The American Company in Washington, D.C. He was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, and moved at an early age to Washington. After graduation from the public schools of Washington, he entered the services of the United States Express Company and remained with that Company for ten years. He was employed by the Washington Loan and Trust Company, was assistant cashier of the National Ci-vj Bank, and cashier of the Commercial National Bank. In 1913, he organized and became President of the Federal National Bank. In 1933, he left the banking field and established himself as a business and financial counselor in Washington. Mr. Poole had served Rotary International as President (in 1918-19), Director and committee chairman. He also had served as President of the Rotary Club of Washington, D. C. Mr. Poole had been Treasurer of the Y.M.C.A. of Washington and of the Columbia Institution for the Deaf; President of the Advertising Club of Washington, of the Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Banking, and of the District of Columbia Bankers' Association. Joseph A. Caulder's Recollections of JOHN POOLE John was from Washington and he succeeded Leslie Pidgeon as President of the International Association of Rotary Clubs on July 1st, 1918. He presided at my first convention - Salt Lake City, June 1919. I will never forget the heat of that week. We met in the Mormon Temple. When the heat got too much for John, he handed the gavel to the Immediate Past President E. Leslie Pidgeon, and I was more than ever sold on Rotary by Friday evening, in spite of the 105 N. John passed away Aug. 17, 1940.J.A.C. [Top of Page]
