Rotary Biography of
H. J. BRUNNIER. San Francisco. California, U.S.A. President, Rotary
International, 1952-53 Director, Rotary International,
1953-54. Member, Rotary
International Headquarters Committee, 1953-54 Rotary Foundation Trustee, 1953-58. H. J. Brunnier of San Francisco, California, has been a
consulting structural engineer since 1908. A specialist in the field of
earthquake and difficult foundation problems, he has been responsible for
the structural safety of many large buildings and bridges on the Pacific
Coast of the U.S.A. and in other parts of the world. He was born in Manning,
Iowa, and was graduated from Iowa State College in Junes, Iowa. Mr. Brunnier has been a member of the Rotary Club of San
Francisco since 1908 and is a Past President of that Club. He has served
Rota International as President (in 1952-53), Vice-President, District
Governor, and as committee chairman and member. For 1953-54, he is a
Director of Rotary International and a member of the Rotary International
Headquarters Committee and, for 1953-58, he is a Trustee of the Rotary
Foundation. Mr. Brunnier has served as President of the American
Automobile Association, California Board of Registration for Civil
Engineers, Structural Engineers' Association of Northern California, Pacific
Association of Consulting Engineers, Engineers' Club of San Francisco, and
the California State Automobile Association. He is a Director and Chairman of the Highway Committee of
the California State Automobile Association, a member of California Major
Highway Development' Committee, a member of the Highway Committee of the
American Automobile Association, a Trustee of the American Automobile
Association Foundation for Traffic Study, and a committee member of the
California State Chamber of Commerce and the San Francisco Chamber of
Commerce. In World War I, he co-operated in organizing and managing
the Concrete Ship Department for the United States Emergency Fleet
Corporation. During World War II, he was structural engineer for some of the
largest Army and Navy projects on the West Coast of North and Central
America. When the $75,000,000 San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was built, he
was a member of the five-man Consulting Engineer's Board. He has been named "The West's Outstanding Engineer" by
the Building Industry Conference Board, is an honorary member of the
Institute of Engineers of Chile, is an Officer of the Belgian Order of the
Crown and an Officer of the French Legion of Honor. From Rotary International, 35 East Wacker Drive, Chicago 1, Ill., U.S.A.. March 1954.
