Arch C. Klumph Rotary's 6th President
Rotary Biography of
ARCH C. KLUMPH President, Rotary
International, 1916-17. (Deceased: 3 June, 1951) At the time of his death, Arch C. Klumph was President of
the Cuyahoga Lumber Company, the Buckeye Box Company, and the Security
Savings and Loan Company of Cleveland, Ohio. He was born in Conneautville,
Pennsylvania. He was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Cleveland,
which was organized in 1910, and served as President and President Emeritus
of that Club. He was active in Rotary International as President (in
1916-17), Director, Chairman of the Rotary Foundation Honorary Trustees, and
as committee chairman and member. Mr. Klumph had served as Director of the Cleveland
Chamber of Commerce and President of the Cleveland Board of Lumber Dealers
and the Cleveland Builders Exchange. From Rotary International, 35 East Wacker Drive, Chicago 1, Ill., U.S.A. March 1954. Joseph A. Caulder Remembers ARCH C. KLUMPH Arch was Rotary's sixth President. He attended almost
every convention of R.I. until he could no longer make the trips. His
interest never waned and he and I discussed, almost argued, over whether or
not Rotary needed any newspaper advertising. It was never settled. When Arch
had reached what is considered a ripe old age he continued to attend the
annual Institute and always looked extremely dapper and youthful. He took
his part in every subject discussed and his words were always carefully
listened to as he was always sound on Rotary matters, as I am sure he was on
business affairs. An old friend of mine from Western Canada days moved to
Cleveland and became involved in a bank crash which in turn involved Arch
seriously but he was kind in his remarks to me about my one time friend,
even though the connection had caused Arch to lose a large sum of money. His memory will live long with all who knew him but he
will likely be remembered by future Rotarians through what is now known as
"The Rotary Foundation Fellowship and International Student Exchange"; but
known first in 1917 as a Rotary Endowment "to carry out some great service
to mankind". Arch first suggested the plan at the Atlanta, Georgia
convention in 1917 and through all the years since then and up to his
passing June 3rd, 1951 worked diligently to further his idea. The Foundation story is given in full on the next page. Away back in 1917 this fine Rotarian was thinking of big
and noble objectives for his beloved Rotary. J.A.C.
