Rotary Biography of
ALLEN D. ALBERT, Terre Haute. Indiana, U. S. A. President. Rotary
International, 1915-16. Dr. Allen D. Albert is Director of the Sheldon Swope Art
Gallery in Terre Haute, Indiana. He was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
As a sociologist, he has studied the causes of city growth in many countries
and has provided programs for the improvement of modern cities. After study
at George Washington University and Columbia Law School, he entered
newspaper work and was editor of the Washington (D.C.) Times and
Editor-Publisher of the Columbus (Ohio) News and the Minneapolis (Minn.)
Tribune. He has been a member of the faculty of the University of Minnesota
in the departments of English and political economy. He has contributed
critiques on music, the graphic arts and architecture to many publications. Formerly a member of the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, Dr.
Albert is now a member of the Rotary Club of Terre Haute, Indiana, and an
honorary member of the Rotary Clubs of Paris and Chicago, Illinois. He has
served Rotary International as President (1915-16), Director, and as
chairman and member of numerous Rotary committees. In 1945, he was one of
Rotary International's consultants to the U.S. delegation at the United
Nations Conference on International Organization in San Francisco. Dr. Albert is a member of many scientific bodies and has
been awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science in Sociology by
Evansville (Indiana) College. As Assistant to the President of the Century
of Progress Exposition (Chicago, 1933-34), he developed the general program
of the World's Fair and presented the project of the exposition to most of
the governments of Europe and to Japan and China. In 1938, Seabury-Western
Episcopal Seminary awarded him it's Silver Cross for conspicuous Christian
