In 1885 he entered the employ of the Union Trust Company in Chicago as an office boy and rose to the position of Vice President. When the Union Trust Company merged with the First National Bank, Mr. Chapin became Vice-President of the First National Bank, holding that position until his retirement from business life. Mr. Chapin became a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago in 1905, just a few months after it's organization, and served as President of that Club. From 1912 until his death in 1945, he served as Treasurer of Rotary International. From Rotary International, 35 East Wacker Drive, Chicago 1, Ill., U.S.A. March 1954.
Joe Caulder Remembers RUFUS F. CHAPIN Rufe, as we all knew him, was Treasurer of R.I. from 1912 until his passing on June 12th, 1945. He had joined Paul Harris' new club in 1905 when it was only an infant. There was never any other name proposed as long as Rufe could carry on. He was plagued with illness during his last few years but always was cheerful and ready to play a joke on someone else. His hobby was "Esperanto" and his Christmas messages were always very interesting. Rufe's contribution to Rotary was large. J.A.C. |
