DR. CRAWFORD McCULLOUGH'S BOARD

1921-22

This was a fine Board as Crawford provided splendid leadership. Crawford, in 1920, had asked me to organize a new Club at Swift Current. I did and it was my first real Rotary job and I have always been proud of the first Club I organized. There was an incident that will always be vivid in my memory.

Back in '21-22 it was the policy of the Board to hold meetings in the home city of the Board members from North America. I was a green District Governor in '21-22, but I bravely laid my plans and notified all the Clubs just when I would make my official visit.

I was shocked a few days later to find that the Board of International Rotary would be in session at. Ft. William (that was and is Crawford's home town) on the day of my official visit. My first thought was to play sick or to advise the Club of a change in the date. However, I decided to "face the music" and duly arrived at Ft. William on a cold morning. I went at once to the meeting place, and Crawford adjourned his Board Meeting. Lutcher Stark handed Crawford a $10.00 bill and said, "Crawford, you win." I then discovered that Lutcher had bet Crawford $10.00 that I would get sick and never show up. Crawford told me he was sure I would not let him down. I felt better then and went ahead with my Club Assembly and addressed the Club at the evening dinner. I was very happy when Crawford, at the close of the meeting, told me I had done well. This gave me some confidence. I knew Crawford would be frank and tell me if I had done a poor job.

Ralph Cummings (a member of this Board) was the official representative in the Spring of '22 at my District Conference in Regina. Mrs. Cummings was with him and we had a great conference.

Lutcher Stark in '22 lost out to Havens in the race for President of R.I. and has not attended many conventions since. In the Spring of '49 Margaret and I visited the Starks at their home in Orange, Texas, and we bad a great time chatting about bygone days.
