STANLEY LEVERTON

In this picture Stanley is at the rostrum during the closing sessions of the Ostend Conference in September 1954.

This was a wonderful experience for us. About 1600 here from Great Britain and all European co tries except those behind the iron curtain. Also from North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean. I was in particular interested in noting what happened when the Jewish members from Israel would meet Rotarians from the Arab countries. I can now record what happened.

There were 10 or 15 and on the second day they got together for an afternoon tea and seemed to be having a jolly time.

The convention (Conference) was held in Ostend's very fine community owned convention hall. I have never seen a finer building for this kind of convention and one with finer planning could scarcely be found. The city of Ostend contributed 40,000 dollars. The country provided, free of charge, its outstanding ballett company and for another evening its Brussels Symphony Orchestra. Both had to come from Brussels. Ostend has no real first class hotels judged by North American standards, but a great many small but comfortable places.
