Cornerstone Ceremony May 16, 1954 1600 Ridge Avenue, Evanston, IL
The Cornerstone for the new headquarters is laid at Evanston on Sunday, May 16th, 1954. On the following page will be found the programme for the day, also [above] some photographs. One is of Past Pres. Guy Gundaker actually laying the cornerstone. Guy was President of R. I. in 1923-24. President of R. I. Joaquin Serratosa Cibils of Montevideo, Uruguay was there, also Ned Leharry of Calcutta, India. P. P. Frank E. Spain, Chairman of the Headquarters Building Committee presided. Kenneth G. Partridge (Board member from Canada the two following years) and J. A. Caulder (Board member 1928:-29) flew over from Toronto for the ceremony. Buses were provided and we all went to the cemetery to pay our respects to Paul P. Harris, the founder, who died in 1947. Also in the plot next to Paul's there lies the remains of Sylvester Schiele and on his tombstone we read the words, "Co-founder with Paul Harris of Rotary International". We flew back to Toronto in 1 hour, 40 minutes. J.A.C.
